Traditional Braces - Orthodontic Treatment

If you have been told that you, or perhaps your child, need orthodontic treatment, one of the first solutions that you may be offered is braces. Braces have long been used to correct alignment and bite problems and with good reason – they remain one of the most effective orthodontic treatments on the market. When many people think of braces they automatically think of the ultra-thick, metal contraptions seen placed over the teeth during the 80s and 90s. Fortunately, the design of modern braces has continued to evolve and today, they are far slimmer, sleeker and more fashionable than ever before.

We are delighted to be able to offer a comprehensive braces service here at our New York dental offices.

What are braces and how do they work?

Traditional braces are created from a series of individual brackets placed onto each tooth and secured using adhesive, through which is fed a long archwire. Elastic bands are then used to place light force onto the archwire to gradually move your teeth into the new and improved position. Regular adjustments are made by our experienced dental team throughout the treatment program.

Modern metal brackets are available in a range of colors, enabling patients to somewhat customize their appearance. This has helped many people turn them into a fashion statement as well as an important dental treatment. It is also possible to have braces that use porcelain rather than metal brackets. Porcelain varieties blend in with the color of your teeth, which helps to make them a more aesthetically pleasing option.

There are two major considerations to make when wearing braces. The first is that it can be very tricky to brush your teeth when wearing them and it will take time and practice to get them properly clean. This is essential though since there is no point having beautifully straight teeth if they aren’t healthy! Secondly, there will be a variety of foods that you cannot eat when wearing a brace as they could damage it. This includes items that are particularly, hard, sticky or chewy.

What issues can braces be used to correct?

Braces can be successfully used to correct a wide variety of different dental issues including the following:

  • Crooked teeth

  • Teeth that have gaps between them

  • An overbite

  • An underbite

  • A crossbite

  • Issues with the temporomandibular joint (TMJ disorder)

How long will I need to wear braces?

Exactly how long you will need to wear braces will depend on your individual circumstances. However, in most cases, patients can expect their treatment to last between 12 and 24 months. After this time, you will need to wear a retainer, which is a clear, plastic shield, over your teeth to prevent them from moving back into their original position.
